6 tables were in action for the clash, 3 games where played, being a competition each player had 50 minutes to player the 6/7 turn. Winning was based on objectives. Points were scored for winning (draw and losing), objectives taken and enemy units destroyed.

Ok here we are month two, and things are a bit easier from here on in as we only need paint half of what we did in month one. From here on in its just 250 points a month +/- 40 pts till the end. For those of us with short memories or just better things to do, the main rules can be found below.
This month we will get into the rhythm of the league with everyone painting the first of their 250pts additions to their 500pt forces. Bil is once again accepting Pledges through our facebook group, but for those without access to social media pledges can also be provided here or through our discord server.

November Bonus Challenge – Loot counters
This month’s challenge is to build and paint 3 themed loot/objective counters for your army. KoW is a scenario driven game and sometimes those scenarios require tokens. In the case of loot/objective tokens you will eventually need d3+4 of them so I have decided to split this up and this month you will need to make the first 3. They can be anything you like but they must be on 25mm round bases to comply with the Kow rules other than that you can make them how you see fit and there will be the usual extra hobby point to claim if you make all three.
750pt Game Scenario – Wagon Loot
The 750 point “skirmish” game will be played on a 3×4 table with a 14 inch deployment area so the forces can get to grips earlier as befitting a small game, and if possible with a road or trackway in the center, running parallel to the players deployment areas, from one table edge to the other of the gaming area.
The scenario will be around your leader/general discovering a merchant caravan in the area which could supply your force or even the enemy if not prevented. If you can capture and “persuade” them to help you instead of the enemy it would be beneficial for both them and your force. With this “help” you can hire more troops/buy illegal magical grimoires to summon more troops/pay slavers for cannon fodder/send a message home for more help, or whatever fits your army and background.
Suffice to say that word has got around of this lucrative target and there will be a bloodbath on the road as forces vie for the loot.
The game will last for 6 turns only. The caravan consists of 3 wagons which can be represented by appropriate models if available, chariots or even just 3 rectangles of card cut to 50mmx100mm. The playing area should have 4 other pieces of terrain; be they woods, hills walls or hills. No buildings should be used as this is a remote area away from civilization. Also be sure to leave the center line free as it’s the trackway.
Players dice off to see who places the first unit then each player takes it in turns to place a unit till their force is fully deployed. Place the first wagon in the middle of the table then the player who lost the dice off places the second wagon anywhere on the middle line of the table within 12 inches of the first wagon and then the player who won places the last wagon within 12 inches of that wagon, all wagons must face the same way. This creates the wagon train.
At the start of each game turn the wagon train will move d3 + 4 inches in the direction it is facing towards the edge of the table, should a wagon leave the table it has managed to escape and cannot be looted further.
The object of the game is to harass the enemy force and at the same time loot the wagons, to do this you must move a unit or hero into contact with a wagon for a full turn, uninterrupted by combat. This enables them to gain a loot counter. Wagons contacted this way will stop and attempt to bargain with the contacting unit giving them a loot counter and the following turn they will move again as normal.
This can potentially cause a bottleneck as those wagons behind will have to stop should they contact a wagon in front. Wagons can be looted more than once but not by a unit that already has a loot token. You can only loot up to 3 tokens as that all the merchants have that interests you, you CAN however rob the enemy of their loot by killing them and robing them, thus denying their force of vital supplies
A unit or hero can only carry a single loot counter each. The winner is the army who has the most loot counters at the end of turn, or if one side has been completely destroyed. Any other result is a draw.
Should your hero/unit be killed the unit or hero responsible can loot them and take their loot counter, only if they don’t already have one themselves otherwise the loot is lost, crushed into the ground in the vicious melee. If the looting army still have it at the end of the game it counts towards their total, but. don’t forget to return the marker at the end of the game.
Ok get cracking peeps and Ill see you at the table
Over the month of October we have seen some wonderful progress from members of the Kings of War Escalation league and although the deadline isn’t up I thought it was time to share with you some of the images we have seen through social media and our discord server.
Don’t worry if you haven’t shared any images yourself yet you still have a couple more days to secure the points against your own pledge. We will request the final pictures of the month 1 pledges on the last day of October. These pictures will be used to tally up what points you have gained from meeting your pledge.
I am looking forward to seeing more work in progress photos and photos from the armies on the field as this month comes to a close and next month starts.
Note about Month 2 Pledges
Before I share the photos I wanted to quickly discuss the upcoming month 2 pledges. There has been some confusion with regards to the value of force you need for month 2. The value of the force you need to host is 750 pts. Keep in mind you are allowed to deviate from this value by plus or minus 40pts. This means your list should be between 710-790 pts. The increase of 250 points per month was decided to make joining the league as accessible as possible.
We will be requesting your pledges as November begins. Once asked for you will need to make your November pledge in the same format as last month. For example David M’s second pledge is below;
This month I pledge to build/paint A regiment of Palace Guard – 160pts A Bolt Thrower – 90pts Total Points taken – 250 pts points brought forward – 5 pts Points Carried forward – 5 pts

With the start of October we see the commencement of the Kings of war Escalation league. As such we can now announce the bonus challenge point and the scenario.
We currently have 8 army pledges in for the escalation league, these can be seen at the bottom of this post. If you haven’t provided your pledge for this month yet, don’t worry you are welcome to join at any point within the month. Simply let us know your pledge either here, on our Facebook group or through our discord server.
We look forward to seeing your progress to meet your
Bonus Challenge – Freehand
You can choose to paint an epic work of art on one of your models, be it the Mona Lisa on a cloak or landscape on a shield, or if like me you have shaky hands you could choose to paint some lines trimming a tunic or perhaps some dodgy looking checks around the trim of a shield. If there’s no transfers or trickery and you did it with a brush its all good, have that additional hobby point!
The Scenario – Kill!
Your scouting force spotted this isolated inn and has decided to ransack a building for the supplies it contains, be it food and drink, potential slaves or recruits. However, they encounter the opponents scouting force who has the same idea.
The initial 500 point “skirmish” game will be played on a 3 foot wide x 4 foot deep table, with a 14 inch deep deployment area, 6 inches from each table edge. This is so the forces can get to grips earlier, as befitting a small game. There should be a small building on the centre line of the game area no larger than 7 inches square. This is impassable terrain and is height level 4 and is an isolated coaching inn.

We have been approached with the temptation of starting an Escalation league for Mantic’s Kings of War fantasy wargame.
For those who do not know of the system I will provide you with Mantic’s own words;
“Kings of War is a mass-battle fantasy wargame set in the world of Pannithor. Rank upon rank of soldiers march into bloody combat, while winged demons battle fiery dragons overhead. From launching devastating bombardments of artillery, to tactically out-flanking your opponent’s forces, Kings of War is a game of exciting, expansive fantasy battles.”

The idea is simple, get as many people playing KOW as
possible. However for some painting a “full” army can be challenging, so we
think it’s easier and less daunting to do it in small stages. The aim of this
campaign is to build and paint a small number of points each month, for six
months. This will result in players having a fully painted 2000 point KOW army
once they pass the finish line.
In addition to encouraging the development of player’s armies we aim to get people playing. In the spirit of this there will be a game challenge every month that requires you to use the models you have painted so far. We hope to host this during the “KOW last Tuesday” monthly meet up at the club, but don’t worry if you can’t make it to the event, life does after all happen. As long as your game is played within the next month that is fine. So there’s plenty of time to arrange a game and play it if they cannot attend on the last Tuesday of the month.
Dwarf Stone Priest
Here’s the guidelines
Players can either build a new force or add to an existing
one, but for the challenge you can only use miniatures that you have painted
and assembled that month. So starting on the 1st month you need to declare your
miniatures for that month that will make up your starting 500 pts. You MUST
have a 500 point, legal KOW force to game with by the end of the month, standard
rules for building armies apply. Players should post up their progress once
completed so we can keep the relevant posts updated.
Points for building your army are given as follows;
1 point for building your selected unit(s)
1 point if you finish painting them (3 colours & wash minimum)
1 point for basing them(this has to be creative, sticking models to plain bases will neither cut the mustard or earn you points)
1 point for completing a bonus challenge when applicable
In addition to the units to paint each month there is a bonus challenge. This can vary from converting a model, making some objective counters or loot markers, painting a freehand design, modelling a banner or writing a short bit of background on your army or it’s general.
You can play as many games as you wish but only 1 game each month counts towards your league points. A league game must be agreed that it is point scoring by both players before the game starts. League points are scored within your games as follows
1 point for each player playing the game
1 point for the winner of the scenario (A draw
does not award any additional points to either player)
Dwarf Shieldbreakers
Monthly points will be tallied and posted on the face book group and the person at the end of the 6 month league who has the most points will be the “Kings of War Escalation League Winner” Remember this isn’t about the best painted; just that your army IS painted, keep in mind a minimum of 3 colours & wash are required to get the “painted” points. We are not being strict with what type of models are used within the league as long as units fit standard base sizes so feel free to get creative. If you want to use a historical miniatures as a kingdom of men army that’s fine, Kings of war can cater for any models from ancients through to pike and shot.
Should players that wish to build using papercraft, that is fine, just keep in mind you’ll get points for building them, however you obviously won’t get points for painting, although there are still points to be earned through creative basing. You’ll have to win plenty of games and knock out the bonus challenges to rack up those points.
Dwarf Ironclad
NOTES:- Some games may be timed with a chess clock, as free apps are available for smart phones as well as actual physical clocks should players want to buy one. Due to the nature of KOW, buying regiments or troops of miniatures it can be a bit difficult getting the exact number of points each month. We are allowing a leeway of +- 40points which can be added/deducted the next month. For example if I selected units for my first 500point list and came up 15 points short I could select magic item(s) totalling 15pts to make the round 500pts OR carry them over to the next month enabling me to build 315 pts of troops instead of 300pts. Alternatively if I found myself a bit short on points I can “borrow” up to 40 pts from the next month, but then I’d be left to build a force of 260pts in the following month instead of the full 300pt.
Important Dates
These are the dates relating to the first round of the league
30th September – deadline to join the league
31st October – deadline to build your first 500 pts army list
30th November – deadline to complete your first game
Should you be interested in playing please let us know either here, through our facebook group or through discord. We look forward to seeing what you can put together.
Over the Pandemic the society was required to adapt to lockdown and provide other means for members to socialise and play games. This came in the form of a discord server that developed over the sixteen months we were unable to open.
During the time we were unable to meet in person four of our regular roleplay games adapted to the change and began to play through the server with the assistance of astral table top (A browser based virtual table top). A further six long form games came into creation during the pandemic with various short form games also springing up on occasion. Fun not being restricted to table top we also saw the community take part in the Inktober 2020 drawing event, Nanowrimo’s writing event and online party games.
We are proud of what the Discord community has created over the difficulties of lockdown and as a society want to continue to support its growth. If you have not checked out our discord server please see the link below
It was nice seeing old and new faces this weekend and
hearing everyone’s positive response to the changes within the club room.
There is still a long way to go with sorting the shelving
and clearing some of the old furniture, but as we could see from those visiting
the effort is certainly worth it. On Saturday we saw the first wargames hitting
our redesigned central area and roleplay return to the round table. Speaking
with members we look forward to seeing old games return and new games start up.
If you have an interest in running something within the
society please let us know. Our opening times currently aren’t concrete so we
are willing to give some flex on opening to make things work for you.
As not everyone could make their way into club this weekend I wanted to share some photos with you showing off some of the space. We look forward to seeing you in the club soon
